Ford is known for its ingenuity and innovative design. Recently, Ford is unveiling the Lightning, a fully electric full-size truck that offers just over 200 miles of range as well as enough power in its battery pack to run your home for up to three days. While the Lightning has received most of the notoriety recently, Ford was quietly working on a hybrid compact truck that is not only affordable but offers up to 500 miles of range and an impressive payload. The result is the Ford Maverick for Northampton drivers.

You might recognize the name "Maverick" from earlier Ford manufacturing. The original Maverick was a four-door car that was met with a modicum of success. Of course, Ford has scaled down on its production of cars and sedans, so many Ford enthusiasts were perplexed as to what this new vehicle could be. The upcoming Maverick is a smaller and more affordable alternative to the Ranger, considered a mid-sized truck. It derives its power from a highly efficient hybrid, and it also offers a surprising payload capacity for truck enthusiasts.

Ford, always ahead of the competition, touts the Maverick as the first pickup truck with a standard hybrid. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder combined with an electric motor that will provide up to 191 horses under the hood of the Maverick and 155 lb-ft of torque. This power train will be paired with a CVT transmission (Continuous variable transmission) and is front-wheel drive standard. This combination is slated to offer 40 mpg (in the city), and drivers will enjoy up to 500 miles of driving range with this power train. Alternatives to this standard power train include a turbo inline four-cylinder that puts out 250 horsepower and a surprising 277 lb-ft of towing and performance torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and one can choose front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The standard power train will offer up to 1,500 maximum payload capacity, with a towing capacity of 2000 pounds. However, if customers opt for the turbo four-cylinder power train, the towing capacity can increase to 4,000 pounds. However, one must also add the option 4K tow package to get this number.

When it comes to safety and technology, the Ford Maverick will offer most of the current safety options with the Ford CoPilot360 safety system. However, consider that many of the standard Ford CoPilot360 features are only included with the upper-level Maverick trims. Even so, drivers will still be able to enjoy standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams. However, to get blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane control features, one will have to opt for one of the Maverick's higher trims. Speaking of technological offerings, a WiFi hotspot is standard in all trims of the Maverick, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available. Keep in mind that access to this software will allow drivers to use their smartphones to carry out voice-activated commands in the truck, including sending and receiving texts from one's contacts and pulling up directions with Siri or Alexa. All Maverick trucks will offer an eight-inch touchscreen for easy access to infotainment systems.

The cabin of the Maverick is small, but space is perfectly utilized. There are many cubbies and extra storage space across the interior of the truck. The Maverick is available in the standard XL trim, but the XLT and the Lariat trims offer optional FX4 off-road packages. The Maverick First Edition will offer a wealth of luxury and features as the top trim for Westfield, MA drivers.
